- The Portrait Series -
“Portraiture has always held a special place in my artistic journey. During my years studying abroad, continuing to
draw portraits has become one of the most personally fulfilling aspects of my practice. It reconnects me with my
roots and reminds me of the rigorous training I received in China.”

As part of preparing for China’s highly competitive national college entrance exam students pursuing art must undertake a separate, intensive examination focused on foundational skills. This includes classical portrait sketching, gouache painting, and
figure drawing. These experiences has instilled in me a strong respect for discipline, technique, and the power of human expression.
Through this training, I developed a deep admiration for classical portrait masters.
While I may never reach their level of mastery, I find meaning in continuing to draw
by hand, especially at a time when many of my peers have moved away from tradit-
ional portraiture. For me, each drawing is an act of quiet persistence and emotional honesty.
This portrait series is both a tribute and a reflection. It captures moments of softness, strength, and individuality — rendered through a lens of memory, cultural identity, and aesthetic sensitivity. In an age of fleeting digital imagery, I hope these works offer a
sense of stillness and human connection.
